Ages 6-8 Jr. Robotics Teams

Sci-Quest is excited to be fielding teams for children ages 6-8 in robotics as part of the Jr. FIRST Lego League (Jr. FLL). In this program, early elementary students will research a problem, design a solution, and present their findings at local competitions. Paired with a Sci-Quest staff member, teams of 4-6 children will work for 1.5 hours per week with Lego elements to perform research, learn about science topics including simple machines, teamwork and programming skills.

Although the children do not, “program a robot” as the older divisions of FIRST do, the Jr. FLL program provides children with a solid understanding of many concepts and skills that will help them as they graduate into the older divisions.

All teams will include:

  • Sci-Quest staff member team “coach”
  • Lego building materials
  • Team specific activities and lesson based on team needs and goals
  • Model building materials and project board
  • Team registration

Registration is now open and will close on September 25, 2015.
Fee: $150 member/$175 non-member

Do you have a special situation? Have a group of 5 or more students wanting to form a team together? Want to have a team at your school location? Would like to be on a girls only team? Please contact Angela O’Neil for more information.

FAQ

What is the difference between Jr. FLL and Robotics Clubs?

Jr. FLL is for students ages 6-8 and is designed as a pre-robotics competition. They work together, learn how to program using Lego WeDo software, but they do not work on the robot till ages 9-14. This program is great for a young child how is interested in robotics, but is not old enough for the larger teams.

Can Sci-Quest offer these courses to my robotics team at the school or other meeting location?

Yes. If your school team would like to take any of these courses as a team during you teams already scheduled meeting time, please contact Angela O’Neil aoneil@sci-quest.org to schedule a specific time.

Is there a competition for my 9-14 year old in the fall?

No. This year, Sci-Quest has decided to not compete in FIRST robotics in the 9-14 year old age group. We are still going to have clubs, but we will not field competition teams. If you would like more information on FLL competition teams for ages 9-14, please contact, Angela O’Neil.

My child’s school has a robotics team. Which team should I participate in?

Your school team. We require that all students who have access to a robotics team at their school be on that team.

My student’s school has a team, but we didn’t get on it. Can we participate in Sci-Quest club?

Please get permission from your school’s robotics teacher and have the teacher contact Sci-Quest to let us know that students from your school have permission to be on Sci-Quest club or team.

Do you have any special requirements for students to be on a robotics team?

Sci-Quest does not turn any student away from the robotics program.  If they want to participate, we will find a place for them. Students ages 6-8 should sign up for Jr. FLL, students 9-14 should sign up for a robotics club. Please note: students must not have access to a robotics team at their school to join a Sci-Quest team.
