December 2015 Field Trips

‘Tis the season for some very special holiday science at Sci-Quest with new field trip programs! From polar explorers to crystal chemistry, the holidays will be brimming with science at Sci-Quest!

All Sci-Quest education programs correlate with National and State Science Courses of Study. To schedule a field trip, please contact Reservations at 256-837-0606, ext. 252 and ask about our Science of the Holidays specials.

Grades Pre-K-Kindergarten

Polar Explorers
Length: 30 minutes
Cost: $3 per student, plus $6 for general admission (with a group of 10 people and more)

Brr! It’s cold out there, but penguins and polar bears don’t mind. Students will find out how these arctic animals keep warm and discover how they survive the coldest places on the planet. No mittens required!

ACOSS: K.2.3, K.3.1, K.6.1, K.6.2, K.6.3

No Flakes Like Snowflakes
Length: 30 minutes
Cost: $3 per student, plus $6 for general admission (with a group of 10 people and more)

Students will keep warm and cozy at Sci-Quest as we learn about the cold stuff of the season. Students will learn how snow and snowflakes are formed, see crystals form and create a snowflake of their own design to take home.

ACOSS: K.1.1, K,1,2, K,2,2
Common Core Standards (NGSS): K-PS3-2

Grades 1-2

Candy Concoctions
Length: 30 minutes
Cost: $3 per student, plus $6 for general admission (with a group of 10 people and more)

Let’s cook up some chemistry with holiday themed candy experiments!  What’s so special about peppermint? Where does chocolate come from?  All this and more will be explored as we experiment and create some holiday candy of our very own.

ACOSS: 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.2.3, 2.1.1, 2.1.2

Toy TInkers
Length: 30 minutes
Cost: $3 per student, plus $6 for general admission (with a group of 10 people and more)

Step right up and learn about the science behind some of your favorite toys! Make noisemakers and things that spin, bouncy balls and bobbing birds.  Be amazed as these toys teach your student about gravity, balance and physics.  Playtime is science time at Sci-Quest!

ACOSS: 1.1.1, 1.2.1, 1.2.1,1.3.3
Common Core Standards (NGSS): K-2-ETS1-1, K-2-ETS1-2, K-2-ETS1-3

Reindeer Flight School
Length: 30 minutes
Cost: $3 per student, plus $6 for general admission (with a group of 10 people and more)

What if an ordinary reindeer wanted to fly? Learn how to make it happen by using the principles of flight, understanding muscles and bones, and practicing with Newton’s laws of motion. Students will create a helicopter powered reindeer to take home.

ACOSS: 3.4.1, 3.4.2, 3.5.1, 4.4.2, 4.4.3,  5.4.1
